SK Telecom has become a founding member of the MIT GenAI Impact Consortium, collaborating with Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty and global industry leaders to explore the commercialization and societal implications of generative artificial intelligence technologies.

The consortium, a strategic initiative led by MIT President Sally Kornbluth, aims to provide practical direction to the AI industry by examining the transformative potential of generative AI across various sectors. In the past year, MIT faculty members have published 25 papers focusing on AI-enabled industrial transformation, underscoring the institution’s commitment to advancing AI research.

Anantha Chandrakasan, Dean of the MIT School of Engineering and MIT’s Chief Innovation and Strategy Officer, leads the consortium. He emphasized the collaborative nature of the initiative, stating that it serves as a bridge between academia and industry, aiming to break down barriers and ensure the benefits of generative AI are realized globally.

The consortium’s founding members include six global companies: SK Telecom, OpenAI, The Coca-Cola Company, Tata Group, Analog Devices, and TWG Global. These organizations will work closely with MIT researchers to accelerate AI breakthroughs and address industry-shaping challenges.

Ryu Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the opportunity to collaborate with MIT’s world-class faculty. He noted that SK Telecom plans to leverage the AI capabilities of the SK Group, particularly through the SK AI R&D Center, to drive innovation across industries. Beyond generative AI, the company intends to broaden its research scope to encompass next-generation areas such as physical AI, manufacturing, and biotechnology.

The SK AI R&D Center serves as the technological hub for SK Group’s AI initiatives, supporting operations in AI modeling, visual AI, digital twins, and AI-driven manufacturing. By integrating research outcomes from the consortium, SK Telecom aims to enhance its competencies in information and communication technology, semiconductors, and energy sectors.

The MIT GenAI Impact Consortium operates under a two-tiered membership model, providing all members with access to MIT’s renowned researchers and students specializing in generative AI. The consortium focuses on several key objectives:

– Investigating urgent applications of generative AI across domains such as life sciences, health, material science, climate and sustainability, linguistics, manufacturing, finance, business, media, and education.

– Envisioning the future of education and work enabled by generative AI applications.

– Understanding the broader societal impacts of advancements in generative AI technologies.

To achieve these goals, the consortium emphasizes interdisciplinary research that fosters collaboration between humans and AI systems, aiming to generate outcomes superior to those achieved independently. By examining the interplay between AI systems and human behavior, the consortium seeks to maximize the technology’s benefits while mitigating potential challenges.

The consortium has issued a call for proposals, inviting MIT Principal Investigators—including faculty, Principal Research Scientists, and Senior Research Scientists—to submit innovative projects that explore high-impact uses of generative AI models. The deadline for submissions is February 28, 2025.

This initiative builds upon MIT’s ongoing efforts to address the societal impacts of generative AI. Earlier, MIT launched a working group on Generative AI and the Work of the Future, convening 25 companies and nonprofits alongside MIT faculty and students to explore how generative AI can lead to better employment opportunities.

The establishment of the MIT GenAI Impact Consortium signifies a significant step toward harnessing the transformative power of AI for societal good. By uniting academic expertise with industry experience, the consortium aims to shape a future where AI-driven solutions transcend boundaries and reimagine possibilities across various sectors.

As generative AI continues to evolve, collaborations like this are essential to ensure that technological advancements align with societal needs and ethical considerations. The combined efforts of MIT and its industry partners, including SK Telecom, are poised to drive meaningful progress in the development and application of AI technologies.
