Alto Hospicio, a rapidly developing urban area in northern Chile, exemplifies the potential of this technology. With annual rainfall often less than 1 millimeter, traditional water sources are scarce. Researchers have installed mesh panels that intercept fog, condensing it into water droplets. These droplets are then channeled into storage tanks, yielding up to 10 liters of water per square meter daily. This initiative aims to supply potable water to approximately 10,000 residents lacking fixed water access.
The concept of fog harvesting is not new to Chile. In the 1970s, physicist Carlos Espinosa developed early fog-catching systems in response to severe droughts in Antofagasta. His designs have since evolved, with modern installations featuring durable materials and improved efficiency. The technology has been implemented in various regions, including Gran Canaria’s Barranco El Andén, where collected fog water supports reforestation efforts.
Recent advancements have further enhanced fog-harvesting efficiency. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have developed nanoengineered steel meshes coated with a solar-activated polymer. This coating enables continuous water collection and purification, even in the absence of sunlight. Such innovations could significantly impact water-scarce regions worldwide.
The versatility of fog-harvesting systems extends beyond drinking water. In Morocco’s Anti-Atlas Mountains, the CloudFisher project utilizes large fog nets to provide water for agriculture and reforestation. This initiative has improved local livelihoods and contributed to environmental restoration. Similarly, in California, scientists are exploring fog collection as a supplementary water source amid increasing drought conditions.
