Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has unveiled plans to construct a 1.4-kilometre bridge connecting Bur Dubai to Dubai Islands. The bridge will feature four lanes in each direction, accommodating up to 16,000 vehicles per hour. Positioned between the Infinity Bridge and the Port Rashid Development Project, it will rise 15.5 metres above Dubai Creek, allowing maritime traffic to pass through a 75-metre-wide channel.
The project includes dedicated lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, with elevators installed at both ends to facilitate access. Additionally, approximately 2,000 metres of surface roads will be constructed to integrate the bridge with existing road networks in Bur Dubai and Dubai Islands.
This initiative is part of the broader Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project, estimated at AED5.3 billion, aiming to enhance connectivity across 15 intersections over a 13-kilometre span. The corridor is expected to serve about one million people, significantly reducing travel time from 104 minutes to 16 minutes by 2030, with projected time savings valued at AED45 billion over two decades.
The agreement for the bridge’s construction was formalised between Mattar Al Tayer, RTA’s Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, and Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shaibani, Chairman of Nakheel. Al Tayer highlighted that this marks the second collaboration with Nakheel to provide access to Dubai Islands, following a 2020 initiative that involved constructing three bridges at the junction of Al Khaleej Street and Abu Baker Al Siddique Road.
